On Sunday afternoons, I usually take my mother for a drive along the coastal road between Fort-Bloqué and Guidel-Plages ( near Lorient) . I always stop and park my car on the roadside near Petit-Loch.On the left-hand side of the road, a sandy beach and powerful waves, on the right-hand side of the road, a stretch of brackish water with reedbeds. While my mother stays in the car and watches the surfers ride the waves, I take her little dog for a walk in the dunes round the lake hoping to see a few birds. On good days, you can see kingfishers , grey herons , little egrets, teals as well as cormorants, mute swans, mallards and coots. Bitterns have been reported but I haven't seen one yet. I have seen a little owl in the bushes and in the moat of the fort. And many years ago, I watched an osprey dive and catch a fish. This time, I come upon a goldfinch bathing in a large puddle of water.
