ALONG THE WATER-SIDE / PRES DU BORD DE L'EAU

Little egrets can be seen almost everywhere. This one was wading in the harbour of St-Cado near Belz at low tide.

At La Trinité, near the Kervilen beach, I saw two spoonbills as well as oystercatchers and small waders such as sanderlings and dunlins.

Nearby, there is a game reserve where I saw lapwings , little egrets , a heron and a few little grebes.

FALGUEREC

Yesterday afternoon, I visited a nature reserve near Vannes.Near the entrance, I saw a few snipes and a kestrel. Inside, there were quite a few birds to be seen: over 400 avocets, over 20 shovelers, a lot of lapwings as well as redshanks, pintails and teals. These birds were sometimes disturbed by a common buzzard flying over. The only birds that came very close to the hide were some mute swans and a spoonbill. These photos were taken through a not very clean windowpane.

BICKERTON HILL IN CHESHIRE

Bickerton Hill is part of the Cheshire Sandstone Ridge stretching across the Cheshire plain in a more or less north-south direction. From the top of Bickerton, you can look west towards the Welsh hills and north towards the Dee estuary and Liverpool. ( In good weather ,you can even see the two cathedrals)
Bickerton is still wooded ( pine, birch) but trees are being cut down to restore the hill to its former habitat: heathland with heather and bilberry. There is a good variety of birds to be seen or heard including the mistle-thrush, the redwing, the fieldfare, the green and great-spotted woodpeckers, the jay, the common buzzard, the raven and the willow warbler.

Down below the Cheshire countryside and its dairy-farms.In the distance ,the first Welsh hills.

Buzzards are often seen perching on the fence-posts by the field.

BRENT GOOSE / BERNACHE CRAVANT

Every year, thousands of Brent geese winter in our area . You can watch them foraging on the mudflats or in the grassy fields and wading near the shore .I like watching them . They are so active. These photos were taken yesterday when I walked along the coastal path from the harbour in Vannes to Rosvelec.

A FEW SIGHTINGS ON RHUYS

On Friday 30th, when I first arrived at Suscinio, the weather was cold, grey and windy, not promising at all.I saw a marsh harrier fly across the reedbeds in the distance but not much else.I stopped at the car-park near the medieval castle and peeped over the bushes towards the lake there. I saw a black-necked grebe for one or two minutes and then it was gone. The weather started clearing up.
At Penvins, the wind was freezing cold and I ate my sandwich in the car while watching flocks of Brent geese wading or flying over. Then I started walking along the rocks which had been uncovered by the ebbing tide. Just behind the chapel , I noticed a white mess on the grass and I saw in my binoculars that a kestrel had just demolished a gull and was still sitting there.I walked towards him as quietly as possible out in the open as there was no cover. He flew a few meters to the left and was scratching the ground when I caught up with him. Then it flew away and perched on twigs between the beach and the grass , still watching for preys landing on the grass.
Later on , I stopped at a tiny harbour called Le Logeo where a little egret was wading in the shallow water. Then I walked along the coastal path from Pen Castell, the tidal mill, and I saw a lone gull wading down below .I assume it is a mediterranean gull but I am not quite sure.
