PENVINS / November 19th

On the dark seaweed-covered rocks , the same birds as usual , turnstones and rock pipits. They are always on the move. I stay put in the shade of a rock to capture them when they get near.

Chaffinch / Pinson / Nov.19th

Penvins. I am about to drive away when I notice a chaffinch and a pied wagtail on the low stonewall between the car-park and the sandy beach.

Penvins.

A short stop at Suscinio before going home. Lots of wagtails on the narrow road between the redbeds and on the car-park near the beach.

QUIBERON/ November 18th

I decide to spend the day at Quiberon and drive round the peninsula. My first stop as usual is Portivy. Throughout the day , the light is very changeable.

Meadow pipit / Pipit farlouse/ Nov.18th

Portivy.

Lots of small birds on the short grass , the rocks and the fences, pipits and cirl buntings. Harsh light. Some of these birds bathe in the puddles of rain-water at the edge of the cliff.

Oystercatcher / Huitrier-pie / Nov.18th

Portivy

The tide is still too high for me to get down into that small cove. So I take the photo from the top of the cliff. This foraging oystercatcher eating up a limpet reminds me of my childhood holidays when we would prise limpets off the rocks with our penknives and eat them.

Black-headed gull / Mouette rieuse / Nov.18th

Le vivier.

The spectacular rocky coast-line attracts lots of visitors who stop at the café there. I take this gull from my car.

Cirl bunting / Bruant zizi/ Nov.18th

Pointe du Conguel.

The sky is darker and darker, the wind is stronger and stronger. I don't think I will be able to get anything good in this poor light. Then I notice a cirl bunting among greenfinches flying here and there. When it is on the ground it is well camouflaged by the colour of the grass and the yellowish moss.It is only when it climbs up some dry twigs that I have a chance to take a few shots.

Cirl bunting / Bruant zizi / Nov.18th

Sanderling / Bécasseau sanderling / Nov.18th

The sun is right opposite and even though the sky is overcast it is not easy to capture sanderlings wading in the surf.

Turnstone / Tournepierre / November 18th

Pointe du Conguel.

Great numbers of turnstones forage among the seaweed on the sandy beach.

As the tide is coming in and the wind is getting up , quite a few kitesurfers practise their sport off the beach on the bay-side of the peninsula.

GARDEN BIRDS IN AUTUMN

A selection of the photos I took in Kim's garden ( in Cheshire) in october when trees and bushes were starting to get their autumn colours. All the birds were still very busy at the feeders and the bird-bath.

BICKERTON PONIES : october 13th

Dave Morris, the Bickerton warden, has invited us to come and see four new ponies that are being added to the herd already on the hill. They have been put in a fenced-in field near Maiden Castle together with some other ponies so that they can get acclimatized to the area. These are Carneddau ponies , a small rare breed of Welsh mountain ponies from Snowdonia that are well used to living outside even in harsh weather conditions. They have been introduced to Bickerton in order to stop the birch seedlings from becoming established. They will help protect the nectar rich plants like heather, bilberry and gorse.
