A DAY IN THE STAFFORDSHIRE COUNTRYSIDE

August 27th. We spent the day near Cannock taking photos of all sorts of small birds that came out of the bushes. There were willow warblers too, but my shots of these birds are not good enough to be included here. These images all have the same thing in common: they were taken in the same place , very often with the same twig as a perch. The original shots all have the same plain ,green background without any twig or leaf whatsoever. So there was no editing of the background at all. All, except one, that of the yellowhammer which did not move from its bush and so the background is very messy and leafy.

A CHESHIRE GARDEN / August 30th

The buddleia flowers are wilting now but there are enough of them left to attract the butterflies which visit Kim's garden. I love the colours and wing pattern of this small tortoiseshell.

Actually , I am not sure whether it's a Small White or a Large White.

En fait, je ne suis pas sûre s'il s'agit d'une piéride de la rave ou du chou.

Vannes / September 18th

Clouded Yellow / Souci / Vannes- September 18th

A few days after seeing great spotted woodpeckers in the wood near the harbour, I went back there with my Nikon D90 fitted with a 200-500mm lens , hoping I would see the birds again. No birds to be seen . I ended up chasing a butterfly in a meadow. And of course the lens was not really appropriate for the job.

Great Spotted Woodpecker / Pic épeiche / Vannes September 14th

That morning , I just wanted to exercise my legs and I decided not to take my long 200-500mm lens, too heavy on my arthritic neck . I went for a walk near the harbour with my NikonD50 fitted with a 70-300mm lens.In the small pine-wood , I heard a lot of noise and saw three great spotted woodpeckers squabbling and flying about from trunk to trunk. As I tried to capture them, I already missed my 200-500mm lens.Even more so later on when I watched two red squirrels chasing each other up a tree-trunk and two jays peering at me from under a bush on the other side of a fence.

QUIBERON / SEPTEMBER 17th

It was a bright and sunny day , quite warm too. I decided to spend the day on the Quiberon peninsula without taking the time to pack a sandwich. I first stopped at Portivy where I saw two godwits foraging on the beach at low tide among small waders. I spent quite a lot of time there. It was a good start to my day.Eventually , I did eat something. Round two o'clock I treated myself to a bowl of mussels , a plate of chips and a glass of lager outside a café on the "côte sauvage". A really good day.

Bar-tailed godwit / Barge rousse

I liked the way these two godwits walked up and down the beach slowly and confidently as if they owned the place. True lords of the beach.

Bar-tailed godwit / Barge rousse / September 17th

This photo was taken a bit further away as I was standing on a height above the beach. The godwits were wading in shallow water instead of foraging in the sand higher up the beach. I had first discarded this photo but when I looked at it again , I saw the birds'tails very plainly and they said "bar-tailed" and not" black-tailed" godwits.

Garden Spider / Araneus diadematus

I was standing among thick gorse-bushes ,waiting hopefully for Dartford warblers to pop up when I noticed this spider in the shade of the undergrowth. With no birds to capture, I photographed this insect.

Wheatear / Traquet motteux / September 17th

I know a place near the beach at Portivy where you can see wheatears. A lot of the area is fenced off to prevent soil erosion and visitors have to keep to the path, which I do. So, wheatears can see you well before you see them and they fly a bit further away.I kept these photos because I liked the colours and the brilliant morning sunshine.

There is a place close to the coastal road where wheatears can often be seen perching on a post. You have to kneel in a hollow to have a chance of capturing them. That time, I walked up the path quietly and had time to take a few shots before the bird noticed me and flew off.

I like the black markings on this bird's plumage . Against the background of tiny pebbles , it's like a camouflage.

Cirl bunting / Bruant zizi /Conguel

After a day spent birding on the Quiberon peninsula, I was ready to go home. Just as I was driving off, I noticed this cirl bunting on a little bank near the car. I took quite a few shots from the car window . Even though I was clicking away like mad at close quarters , the bird did not seem to notice me. I was waiting for it to perch nicely on a piece of interesting rock but it would rummage the ground in dry grass and dust, a really scruffy setting.

This time, I cropped the photo and tried to paint off the messy background using the paintbrush. I hope the result is worth the time taken to do it.

I like the intricate and yet organized structure of plants when I look very closely at them. Maybe it is because of my poor eyesight and those at least can't run off or fly off.

A TRIP TO BELVIDE / SEPTEMBER 1st

It was a nice and sunny day. We spent it at Belvide , taking photos of small birds in the bushes outside one of the hides overlooking the reservoir. As usual we saw lots of blue tits but also greenfinches, tree sparrows, chiffchaffs, whitethroats and willow warblers.
