SOME BRENNE BUTTERFLIES AND A MOTH

On the third day of our stay in Brenne , mid-morning, we noticed there were quite a few butterflies in a small rough patch of ground near the thick hedge of a field , quite close to the Chérine reserve. For these photos , I used a NikonD50 camera with a 70-300mm lens.

Small Heath / Procris ( coenonympha pamphilus)

Green Hairstreak / Argus vert ( callophrys rabi)

When I saw the green undersides of the wings I realized I had never photographed this one before.

Cistus Forester / Procris ( Adscita statices)

When I saw this moth land in the grass near me I was dazzled by the deep metallic blue of its wings but I did not know what sort of an insect it was. I had to ask for help to identify it correctly . I had never seen one before.

A SHORT STAY IN BRENNE / June 1st-3rd

When we arrived at Mézières-en-Brenne, the weather was not promising at all , thick drizzle with an hour-long dry interval. Then it picked up over the next day and became very hot and sunny on our last day.So our first photos were a bit disappointing because the light was not very good then. I was learning to use my new camera , a Nikon D90 , together with a Tamron 200-500mm lens. We saw quite a few good birds ( for me at least !) : purple heron, night heron, little bitterns, great white egret, cuckoo, hoopooes , black kite, marsh harrier, black redstart, blackcap, reed warbler, kingfisher, whitethroat, whiskered tern and red-backed shrike. We also watched a fox moving about the tall grass in a field where cattle were grazing. My first capture was a purple heron soon after our arrival.

Second day / Deuxième jour

The main event of that day was the sighting of a pair of little bitterns at the "étang de la Sous". They showed well, half-way up the reeds, for about twenty minutes. It was a lifer for me and so I was well pleased.

Third day / Troisième jour

A warm, sunny day. In the morning we saw a strange scene, three male pochards escorting a female pochard towards the bank. Eventually, the female climbed onto a log and faced two of the males which were maybe waiting for something to happen. But nothing happened.

Terrapin / Cistude

We saw terrapins in at least three different places. Those were taken from one of the Chérine hides. There were a dozen of them together very close to the hide near the bank of the lake.I also captured a male broad-bodied chaser as it hovered in front of the window with my 200-500mm lens.

MAY 30TH

On that day , we went first to Riantec where I captured a Black-veined White on the flowers of a gorse-bush.The first of these shots was taken with a NikonD90 and a 200-500mm lens because I had expected to photograph birds. Then for all the other photos , I used a Nikon D50 with a 70-300mm lens. Later on we stopped in a field ,just outside Lanester where there were quite a lot of butterflies and insects.

Mystery butterfly

I am not sure I can identify this butterfly correctly. I think it is probably a female Common Blue. I find it pretty and I like it.It was taken at Le Hézo on may 24th.

LE HEZO / May 24th

I spent a few hours at Le Hézo where I took quite a few photos when walking along a path leading to a former birdwatching hide which was rubbished by some local youths. There , in a field I thought I was taking shots of a couple of pretty butterflies clinging to the stem of a daisy but when I got home , I realized there was a third creature there , right at the top. It was a crab-spider( misumena vatia) which had captured one of the butterlies. These tiny spiders can change colour so as to camouflage better when lying in wait for their preys. The butterflies were glanville fritillaries.

SUSCINIO / May 22nd 2010

I went to Suscinio in the morning and stayed there until mid-afternoon. The weather was very hot. The thermometer in the car indicated 35°C when I came back from a walk along a path by the marsh.I had captured a few butterflies and I was quite happy.
