Goat willow / Saule marsault / Salix caprea

Today , I needed a bit of fresh air and I went for a walk to Rosvellec, between Vannes and Séné. I saw lots of blue tits, great tits, chaffinches, heard chiffchaffs and wrens, saw one wren in a bush, failed to capture it well , and a jay flying from tree to tree in a distant field.I took pictures of the male catkins of goat willows ,growing by the path.I used the macro position on my 70-300mm lens to photograph them.Male catkins and female catkins grow on different trees. The tree is pollinated by the wind. Nearby, I found a tree with female catkins but the wind was far too strong then and the twigs kept waving in front of my camera. My photos are blurred.

Back at home , I was sitting by the french window ,reading, when I heard a blue tit call . There it was ,by the feeder ,looking inside.

BALCONY BIRDS / March 2010

I live in a flat on the fifth floor of a building near the town-centre. I have put up a small feeding-station on my tiny balcony. I can watch my bird visitors through the living-room french window. I have tried to photograph them with the window left open but they fly away as soon as they hear my camera shutter. So now I photograph them through the windowpane standing away behind my settee or sitting motionless in the armchair closer to the window. Most of the time the photos are taken against the light. I have used either my Tamron 70-300mm lens or my Tamron 200-500 mm lens.

J'ai utilisé soit mon objectif Tamron 70-300mm , soit mon objectif Tamron 200-500mm.

Robin / Rouge-gorge

Long-tailed tit / Mésange à longue queue

I was really happy to see two long-tailed tits visit my feeders for the first time on March 10th. Since then , they have been coming every day several times a day.

Blackbird / Merle noir

Blackbirds are easy to scare off if they become aware of a movement in the room. A few days ago, I saw Mr and Mrs Blackbird seemingly having a quiet conversation on the railing of my balcony.

BERDER / March 16th

On March 16th, I crossed over to the island of Berder ( near Larmor-Baden) at low tide. I walked round the island and it was very enjoyable as the weather was very nice and sunny. This robin was the first bird to greet me from a tree as I started walking along the coastal path.A bit further on, I heard a wren singing on my left, some distance away from the path. I found the bird on a pile of logs and I tried to take a few shots ,with my back leaning against a tree-trunk.My photos of this wren are useless as they are all slightly blurred. My fault really as I didn't have any support and held the camera in my hands.Kim keeps saying I should always have a monopod when I go wandering about with my camera. Serves me right ,then.Towards the end of my walk , I noticed a few crested tits flitting about in a tree by the sandy shore but I did not manage to capture one.

This is the first daisy I noticed and I took its picture with my 200-500 mm lens!

Brent goose / Bernache cravant

As I walked round the island I noticed a small flock of foraging Brent geese , swimming round in the same direction. Later on, they ended up in the oyster-beds at the other end of the island. That's where I saw the little egret too.

Larmor-Baden / March 8th

It was very sunny and peaceful when we arrived at this small sandy beach near Larmor-Baden. There was no wind at all and the tide was pretty low. We noticed this greenshank wading in the smooth water near the edge. There was no place where to hide to take photos . We had to be careful when walking along the beach not to spook it . If we got too close it would fly away to the other end of the beach.

On the way back from Larmor-Baden to Vannes, we noticed this kestrel perched at the top of a post and I stopped the car in the road. There was no way I could park on the roadside because of the ditch and we had to take a few shots through the window as quickly as possible so as not to be too much of a nuisance to the other drivers.

Quiberon / March 9th

We captured a small flock of sanderlings as they ran along the surf on a beach near Conguel. It was still very windy and I was a bit worried about getting sand in my camera as I knelt down very low near the edge of the water.

Suscinio / March 11th

On that day ,we did some birdwatching at Suscinio near the marshes between the castle and the beach. We saw two buzzards, one kestrel , one lark and one glossy ibis. I counted at least sixteen spoonbills , flying about or wading in the pond. Sometimes they came quite close to the road but whenever we tried to get near to photograph them, they would fly off and forage at the other end of the marsh , near the reedbeds.

Spoonbill / Spatule blanche

To feed , spoonbills sweep their bills in the water from side to side as they walk. On that day, the water was quite choppy because of the very strong wind and this did not make focusing easy.
