LORIENT - February 24th, 2013

As on every Sunday afternoon, I take my mother for a drive along the coastal road between Fort-Bloqué and Guidel-Plages.The weather is very gloomy and that makes the coastline look quite forbidding. That does not stop surfers practising their sport.

This is the area where I find a a pair of purple sandpipers.Picture taken with the Nikon P510.

It is cold and windy but very sunny. I see mainly turnstones and rock pipits. The pipit's plumage may look quite drab but I like the poses of this bird which are very expressive.
Rock pipits

Turnstone- Quberon, February 19th
There are flocks of turnstones foraging on the grassy area between the coastal road and the edge of the cliff. They are busy and move about very quickly. This image is taken from the car with my NikonD90- Tamron 200-500mm kit.

QUIBERON- NIKON P510 , February 19th

Standing on the edge of a cliff, I can hardly make out a pair of purple sandpipers among some turnstones on the rockface opposite. I can't get nearer because of the inlet of water with rushing waves in -between. I decide to use my ' small camera ' to get a record cum habitat shot and I am quite pleased with the result. There is a dip in the rock filled with water and the sandpipers take turns to bathe in it.

LASNE-RHUYS - February 15th 2013

A nice, sunny day. Low tide.I wander about the saltpans at Lasné and the coastal path opposite Tascon ,an island which can be reached via a causeway at low tide.A few redshanks , little egrets and shelducks.I decide to post one picture of a redshank in the saltpans, one picture of a shelduck on the water, one picture of a black-headed gull on a post, one picture of a mimosa -bush in flower and several pictures of a little egret foraging on the mudflats. My friend Kim will say I should only post one of those but I never tire of watching the many different poses of this bird .

VANNES- February 14th 2013

Again, the same local walk. The weather is very dull and I don't expect to see much. At the end of a narrow path in the wood, I notice the outline of a jay in the lower branches of a conifer. I try to take some shots but it's too dark and I wait till the bird moves further away to some other tree more in the open.I take a few shots with my new camera , the NikonP510 and I am quite happy with the results. It's the first time I can get close enough to a jay to get some shots.Later, on my way back, the sun shines at last and I hear a wren singing very loudly. I might not have noticed it otherwise.I also take a picture of a blackbird scurrying in the grass. Blackbirds seem to be very busy.Ebbing tide, I capture a little egret wading in the harbour. When I get home and park my car ,I see a magpie watching me. Magpies have taken over the place where I live. I can see one of their nests from my window on the fifth floor and one of them sometimes lands on my small balcony to have a look round.

VANNES -February 11th

Late in the morning, I decide to go for a walk locally during a sunny interval between downpours. The paths are very muddy but it is quite warm. You can feel spring is in the air. I notice a blue tit which keeps coming back to the same tree-trunk to peck inside a hollow. Also some small trees  in flower (prunus) and catkins. I am watching a small flock of long-tailed tits when it starts pouring down again.

QUIBERON -February 2nd 2013

Very sunny, gale-force wind, choppy sea, ebbing tide. My first stop is Portivy where I walk on the beach and see small waders among the seaweed. I don't want to get too close so as not to disturb them. I capture a stonechat and a flock of sanderlings taking off in the distance.Later on, driving to St-Pierre, I stop on the roadside and from the car  I take a few pictures of stonechats on the gorse-bushes in flower . Most of the pictures are of the female, the last one is of a male.I also take a picture of a meadow pipit perched at the top of a twig. When I get to Conguel, I find another meadow pipit and lots of purply-blue fungi under the trees in a small coniferous wood.I think they are wood blewits but I am not sure. When I go back there two weeks later  there is no trace of them.
