WHIXALL MOSS September 12th

Whixall Moss is a large peat-bog area which stretches across part of Shropshire and part of Wales. Commercial peat-cutting stopped a few years ago and now it is a nature reserve.We went there on a sunny september afternoon with our friend Neil who helped us identify the dragonflies and damselflies we saw there.I have chosen to present these photos in the order I took them during our visit which was about two and a half hours long.I used a NikonD50 camera and a Tamron 70-300mm lens.
Whixall Moss is une grande étendue de tourbières qui s'étend en partie dans le comté du Shropshire, en partie dans le Pays de Galles. L'exploitation commerciale de la tourbe a pris fin il y a quelques années et Whixall Moss est à présent une réserve naturelle.Nous y sommes allées par un après-midi ensoleillé de septembre en compagnie de notre ami Neil qui nous a aidées à identifier les libellules que nous y avons vues.J'ai choisi de présenter ces photos dans l'ordre où je les ai prises pendant notre visite qui a duré environ deux heures et demie.J'ai utilisé un reflex Nikon D50 et un objectif Tamron 70-300mm.

Black darter / Sympetrum noir

These two dragonflies were mating on tall grass away from the pool-water. This was taken at the beginning of the afternoon.

Ces deux libellules s'accouplaient sur de la végétation haute à l'écart de l'eau de la mare.Cette photo a été prise en début d'après-midi.

Meadow grasshopper / Criquet des pâtures

This grasshopper landed on the strap of a camera which had been left on the ground.

Ce criquet s'est posé sur la lanière d'un appareil photo qui avait été posé sur le sol.

Common backswimmer / Notonecte( notonecta glauca)

This insect swims on its back and has long hindlegs like oars.

Cet insecte nage sur le dos et a de longues pattes postérieures comme des avirons.

Black darter / Sympetrum noir

I took these two black darters flying in tandem from the other side of the pool, so it was not easy to see them and to focus on them.What I like about this photo is the background showing the luxuriant vegetation that grows on the edge of this peat-bog and its brilliant colours.

J'ai pris ces deux sympetrums striés volant en tandem de l'autre côté de la mare , aussi ce n'a pas été facile de les repérer et de faire la mise au point sur eux. Ce que j'aime dans cette photo, c'est l'arrière-plan montrant la végétation luxuriante qui pousse sur les bords de cette tourbière et ses couleurs fantastiques.

Common hawker / Aeschne des joncs(Aeshna juncea)

This was taken looking down into the water by the edge of the pool as this female dragonfly was ovipositing , thrushing its abdomen below the water surface.

Cette photo a été prise en regardant dans l'eau du bord de la mare alors que cette femelle pondait ses oeufs en poussant son abdomen sous la surface de l'eau.

Common darter / Sympetrum strié

This male common darter is probably feeding from a perch over the water. I like the bright red colours which stand out so well against the watery background.

Ce sympetrum mâle est perché sur une brindille au-dessus de l'eau, probablement en train de se nourrir. J'aime sa couleur rouge vif qui ressort si bien sur l'arrière-plan de l'eau.
